Welcome to the Department of History
The Department of History of the college is one of the oldest ones having completed thirteen years of Honours teaching. The Department has a wonderful past and very enthusiastic present paving the way for the impressive days of the future. It nurtures the untamed youth that manifests itself in diverse forms. The distinguished professors who have served or are serving this department over the years, try to make a safe haven for learning and cooperation. A lively academic and cultural ambience and a very cordial teacher-pupil relationship have always been and hopefully will be the distinctive characteristic of the department. Due to severe shortage of funds and space the department does not have a separate seminar/departmental library but the central library has more than 690 books dedicated to History subject. Within the strict, limited capacity the department tries to organize students’ seminar, workshops and movie screenings to facilitate the students.

History is a very important, interesting and comprehensive subject. We can say, it is a “queen” or “mother” of the social sciences. In the words of B.M. Laddell Hart, “History is the record of man’s steps and slips. It shows us that the steps have been slow and slight: the slips, quick and abounding. It provides us with the opportunity to profit by the stumbles and tumbles of our fore-runners. Viewed a right, History is the broadest studies, embracing every aspect of human life. It lays the foundation of education by showing how mankind repeats it errors and what those errors are. Bismarck used to remark, “Fools say that they learn by experience. I prefer to learn by other people’s experiences. This study of history offers us that opportunity. It is universal experience-infinitely longer, wider and more varied than any individual’s experience.”

Our department from the time of its inception delved itself to enable students so that they could –

  • Develop qualities of ideal citizenship.
  • Develop qualities of leadership.
  • Promote self-understanding.
  • Develop the consciousness about society and social values.
  • Understand the influence of historical facts and situations upon life.
  • Develop the spirit of patriotism.
  • Grow the sense of tolerance.
  • Develop international understanding.
  • Grow awareness towards local history.
  • Teach moral values and universal values.
